HCBI 2008 Annual Dinner

Huntingdon County Business and Industry, Inc. will hold its annual dinner on Thursday, May 15, 2008 in the Baker Refectory in Ellis Hall on the Juniata College campus. The networking reception, sponsored by First Energy, begins at 6 pm with dinner beginning at 7 pm.
Agriculture is an important part of the economy of Huntingdon County. This year's keynote address will be given by Abe Harpster, co-owner of Evergreen Farms in Spruce Creek, PA. The farm raises over 2,700 milk cows with an additional 2,200 heifers. They actively farm their family’s 5,000 acres as well as an additional 2,000—3,000 acres in the surrounding area. With land in two counties and four townships, Evergreen Farms have proven to be good stewards of the land. The Harpsters have taken pro-active steps to reduce the effects of their farm on the environment by fencing nearly eight miles of land adjacent to Spruce Creek, and by rotating crop fields and pastures to minimize nutrient depletion and winter erosion. The tillable acres are farmed using state-of-the-art GIS mapping and computer software to maximize crop yield and minimize pesticide/herbicide use.
The dinner also serves as the organization's annual meeting, where new bylaws are voted upon by the membership, new board members are received, and retiring board members are recognized.
